800 champion Symmonds thinks and runs out of the box - USATODAY.com

DES MOINES — Nick Symmonds, one of the biggest stars at the U.S. outdoor track and field championships, was in trouble.

Or so it seemed.

The two-time defending national champion in the 800 meters found himself boxed in, in fifth place as a first-round field rounded the final curve.

But Symmonds, as few can in a difficult event, went from out of the picture to out in front, edging to the lead just before the finish line, qualifying for Frday's semifinals.

"Everybody was staying outside, so I moved inside and thought I might be able to ride it all the way to the front," Symmonds said. "But I got boxed in.

"I won't make that mistake in the finals."

Or, presumably, even in the semifinals.

The 800 final is Sunday, when Symmonds could be joined by some of his Oregon Track Club Elite teammates. The OTC qualifiers Thursday included Symmonds, Tyler Mulder, Mark Wieczorek and Matt Scherer.
