INDIANAPOLIS — The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will return to Sacramento in 2014,USA Track & Field announced Tuesday.  

“Sacramento has a tremendous track & field culture and we are very pleased to be returning in 2014,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “The fan support in the region is fantastic, and the weather conditions serve sprinters, field event athletes and distance runners alike. We look forward to another successful partnership with the Sacramento Sports Commission.”

“I’m thrilled to welcome Track & Field back to Sacramento,” said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.  “Sacramento has some of the most passionate sports fans in the United States and I have no doubt that this community will support the event and the athletes like no other region in the country could.”
 
Site of the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Trials for Track & Field, Sacramento has hosted several prominent track & field events recently, including the 2011 World Masters Championships, 2010 USA Masters Championships, 2010 USA Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, and 1995 USA Outdoor Championships.  Sacramento also has been home to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

The Sacramento Sports Commission will serve as the local organizing committee for the 2014 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held at Cal State University Sacramento’s Hornet Stadium (capacity 21,195). Site of record attendance during the Olympic Trials, the stadium has undergone significant upgrades since the 2004 Olympic Trials including new public entrances, resurfacing of the infield and track, and a new scoreboard.

Sacramento has been the site of several record-setting performances, including Stacy Dragila’s first world-record pole vault in 2000 and the legendary “Night of Speed” during the 1968 USA Outdoor Championships at Hughes Stadium. On a single night, three American men broke the existing world record in the 100 meters, with a hand-timed 9.9 in the semifinals – Jim Hines, Ronnie Ray Smith and Charlie Greene.
