After threatening to take legal action to gain entry into the men’s 10,000-meter run on Friday at the Olympic track and field trials, a group of athletes canceled an arbitration hearing set for Thursday afternoon. Their lawyer said they feared reprisals from the sport’s national governing body.

The controversy stemmed from the allowed entry of Adam Goucher into the 25-man field, despite the fact that he had only the 32nd-fastest qualifying time.
