EUGENE, Ore. — Kara Goucher’s emotions hit two extremes in the span of two races Friday night at the United States Olympic track and field trials. She surged ahead in the final half-lap to win the first major race of her career in the 5,000 meters, but her celebration did not last as she watched her husband, Adam Goucher, fail to make the Olympic team in the 10,000.

So despite making the team in her second event — she finished second in the 10,000 last week — she left the track with tears in her eyes.
